Thalassiodracon dates from the latest Triassic (208 million years ago) of southwestern England. The original specimen of this marine reptile is in The Natural History Museum, London, and comes from a 19th century building stone quarry. It was only recognized as a distinct genus, and named by Dr. Glenn Storrs of the Cincinnati Museum Center and Dr. Michael Taylor of the National Museum of Scotland, in 1996.
