Stenopterygius

Sten-AHP-ter-IG-ee-us – “Narrow wing”

Stenopterygius dates from the Early Jurassic (180 million years ago) of southwestern Germany. Its streamlined shape and highly developed fins indicate that Stenopterygius was a rapid and agile swimmer, capable of catching the swift, squid-like animals (belemnites seen on image to the left) that made up the bulk of its diet.
