Tair-AN-oh-don – “Toothless wing”
Pteranodon dates from the Late Cretaceous (80 million years ago) of western Kansas. With a wingspan of nearly 25 feet, Pteranodon was once thought to have been the largest flying animal. Newer fossils indicate that some flying reptiles (pterosaurs) grew much larger, with an almost 40 foot wingspan. It is now also thought that these animals were active flyers, not just gliders.
