Platecarpus

Plat-ee-CARP-us – “Flat hand”

 

Platecarpus lived during the Late Cretaceous (80 million years ago) of western Kansas. Platecarpus is related to modern varanid (monitor) lizards and belongs to an extinct group called mosasaurs (“Maas reptiles”). Mosasaurs were exclusively marine and evolved broad paddle-like limbs as an adaptation to life at sea.
