Ichthyosaurus

ICK-thee-o-SORE-us – “Fish reptile”

Ichthyosaurus dates from the latest Triassic (209 million years ago) of southwestern England. Ichthyosaurs, along with whales, sharks, and bony fish such as tuna, are one of the classic examples of convergent evolution – distantly related animals evolving similar shapes over time because they operated in similar ways in the same environment, and thus under similar physical constraints.
